GM Plans to Idle Five Plants as Domestic Car Production Withers

General Motors Company announced it would shutter five North American plants in 2019, effectively marking the end of the road for 6 sedans, including Chevy Impala, Cruze, Volt, Cadillac CT6, XTS, and Buick LaCrosse.

The five plants are Detroit Hamtramck; Lordstown, OH; Oshawa, ON; Baltimore, and Lansing-Grand Rapids.

As these changes are made, GM is reviewing potential underutilized and the under-capacity performance of 12 plants across the U.S.

GM and its Union, UAW, will begin talks regarding the 3,300 US and 2,600 Canadian UAW workers that will be affected by the idling of the plants.

Additionally, over 8,000 salaried positions will be eliminated as GM positions itself for effectiveness in an electrified, connected, and autonomous automotive landscape.
